NAC is a stable form of L-cysteine, a naturally occurring sulphur-containing amino acid, helping to provide the body with the cysteine it needs for important processes including the production of glutathione.

Glutathione is often referred to as the body’s ‘master antioxidant’ because of its central role in antioxidant defence, helping to protect cells against oxidative damage caused by free radicals. It is found throughout the body but is particularly concentrated in the liver, which is a major site of glutathione production and utilisation. As one of the body’s main detoxification organs, the liver also uses glutathione in important detoxification processes involving certain compounds and metabolic by-products.

Cysteine is also an important component of keratin, the structural protein that helps give skin, hair and nails their strength and structure. As one of the few sulphur-containing amino acids, cysteine helps form strong disulphide bonds within keratin, contributing to its structural stability.
