What Is Quercetin?

Quercetin is one of the most widely studied plant compounds in nutrition, yet many people have never heard of it until they begin exploring supplements or looking more closely at the foods they eat.

Found naturally in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs, quercetin belongs to a group of plant compounds known as flavonoids. These compounds are responsible for many of the vibrant colours found in plants and form part of their natural protective defence systems.

In recent years, quercetin has attracted growing interest from researchers and health professionals alike, making it one of the most talked-about flavonoids in the wellness space.

Where Is Quercetin Found?

Quercetin occurs naturally in a variety of plant foods, including apples, onions, berries, kale, broccoli, capers and herbs such as nettle. Eating a varied diet rich in colourful plant foods is one of the best ways to naturally increase your intake of flavonoids, including quercetin.

The Conversation That First Sparked My Interest in Quercetin

During my years working in a health shop, one customer would come in every spring to buy dried nettles. She told me that since making nettle tea part of her daily routine, she no longer experienced the hay fever symptoms that had previously affected her each spring.

Of course, that was her personal experience, and it isn't something we can assume would be the same for everyone. However, it did leave me wondering what it was about nettle that might be having such a noticeable impact for her.

At the time, I was already studying nutrition and learning about plant compounds such as quercetin. Discovering that nettle contains naturally occurring quercetin only strengthened my interest in the topic.

Quercetin is one of the plant compounds that frequently comes up in discussions around seasonal wellbeing, which may help explain why interest in it continues to grow.

Why Are People Interested in Quercetin?

Much of the interest in quercetin centres around its antioxidant properties.

Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals, which are generated naturally through normal metabolism and exposure to environmental factors such as pollution, UV radiation and smoking.

As researchers continue to explore the role of plant compounds in health and wellbeing, quercetin remains an area of ongoing scientific interest.

Why Is Quercetin Often Combined with Vitamin C?

Vitamin C and quercetin make a complementary pairing, providing antioxidant support through different but potentially synergistic mechanisms. Research suggests that vitamin C may help regenerate quercetin after it has acted as an antioxidant, helping to support its continued activity within the body's antioxidant network.

One example is Meteron Labs Liposomal Vitamin C & Quercetin, which combines both nutrients in a convenient liquid format. The formula uses liposomal technology, which encapsulates nutrients within phospholipids to help protect them from degradation during digestion and support efficient delivery within the body.

For those who prefer liquids over capsules, liposomal supplements can offer a simple and convenient way to support daily nutrient intake.
