Menopause: Understanding the Changes and Supporting Your Health
Menopause: Understanding the Changes and Supporting Your Health
Menopause marks a transition from our reproductive years into a new chapter of life, one shaped not by fertility, but by wisdom, experience and a deeper understanding of ourselves. It is a significant hormonal transition, and because oestrogen receptors are found throughout the body, the changes can be felt in surprisingly diverse ways.
During perimenopause, oestrogen levels can fluctuate considerably before eventually declining. Oestrogen has roles in the brain, bones, cardiovascular system, skin, muscles and the urinary and vaginal tract, as well as reproductive health. This helps explain why menopause can bring such a wide range of symptoms, from hot flushes and night sweats to changes in sleep, mood, energy, libido, skin, joints and cognition.
Brain fog is frequently reported too: perhaps finding a word suddenly elusive, struggling to concentrate or feeling that your mental sharpness has changed. Hormonal changes may contribute, but sleep disruption, stress, alcohol, nutritional deficiencies and other factors can also influence cognitive function. The whole picture is always important to consider.
Supporting your body through menopause
Understanding menopause need not begin when symptoms appear. The earlier we become familiar with the changes ahead, the more opportunity we have to prepare. Yet knowledge remains valuable at every stage; understanding what is happening within the body allows us to make informed choices and support our health with greater confidence.
A nutrient-dense diet is important at any age but becomes particularly relevant as oestrogen declines. Prioritising protein helps preserve muscle mass, while calcium-rich foods and adequate vitamin D support bone health. Fibre, vegetables, fruit and healthy fats provide nutritional support for cardiovascular and metabolic health, areas that become increasingly significant after menopause. Regular resistance and weight-bearing exercise work alongside nutrition to maintain muscle strength and bone density.
Sleep quality and stress levels also deserve particular attention during this transition. Fluctuating oestrogen may impact upon sleep cycles, while disrupted sleep can in turn influence mood, energy, appetite and cognitive function. These effects may be compounded by chronic and on-going stress, making it more difficult to adapt to hormonal change. Prioritising restorative sleep, regular movement and practices that support the nervous system can therefore be an important part of building resilience through perimenopause and menopause.
Nutritional and supplement support
There is no single menopause supplement to suit every woman. At W-Wellness, we have a diverse range of nutritional, botanical and medicinal mushroom formulations that can be considered alongside a healthy diet and lifestyle.
These include BodyBio PC, providing phospholipids including phosphatidylcholine; Wild Nutrition Food-Grown® Perimenopause Complex; Fushi MenoHarmony, a botanical blend containing ingredients including shatavari, ashwagandha, brahmi and saffron; and HIFAS-Menopause, combining medicinal mushrooms with botanical and nutritional ingredients.
The right approach depends on your individual symptoms, nutritional status, lifestyle and wider health picture.
When should you seek advice?
Menopause is a natural stage of life, but new or unusual symptoms should not automatically be attributed to hormones. Changes such as unusual or heavy bleeding, bleeding after menopause, persistent palpitations or symptoms that are troubling or unexplained are worth discussing with your GP or another appropriate healthcare professional.
Menopause is not something to fear or something we need to “fix”. It is a transition, and one for which we can prepare. Understanding what is happening in the body and supporting our health through nutrition, movement, sleep and targeted nutritional support can help us move through midlife with greater confidence.
If you would like personalised support, book a consultation with W-Wellness to explore your symptoms, nutrition and lifestyle, and find an approach that is right for you.
