Supplements for Optimised Ageing and Skin Health by Dr Rumi Kisyova

“You are what you eat” or in our scenario “Your skin is what you supplement with”. But why do we need supplements if we eat nutrient packed food? Every day we are exposed to different external and internal stressors that impact the way we function. UV light, lack of sleep, screen time…they all change the way we function, rest, recover and metabolise our food. This is why taking different supplements can help us maintain and improve our overall health.

What are my non-negotiable supplements, that support both longevity and healthy skin?

Magnesium is an essential mineral and electrolyte that is involved in many differentbiochemical reactions in the body including collagen production which is a vital protein for the structure of the skin. Magnesium also helps retain moisture in the skin, hence its role in preventing trans epidermal water loss. It also has very potent anti-inflammatory functions as well as playing a role in wound healing.

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), plays an essential role in various pathways that modify the ageing process. NAD levels naturally decline with age, with levels dipping by 50% by age 40 and 80% by age 60. Chronically low NAD+ is observed in overnutrition, chronic diseases and alcohol consumption. Maintaining healthy levels of NAD+ has been shown to improve the mitochondrial function and the quality of our stem cells.

Pro-and prebiotics play an essential role in maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn modulates the skin microbiome. Different skin conditions such as eczema, acne, rosacea and even premature ageing, can be linked to changes in the microbiome. An optimal bacterial balance of the gut and skin can contribute to healthy, glowing skin.
