Feeling Stretched? Simple Ways to Support Your Body Through Stress
We all know the feeling: a racing mind at bedtime, tension in the shoulders, patience wearing thin. A little pressure can sharpen our focus, but without regular moments to release that pressure and bring our nervous system back into balance, it can quietly take its toll on how we sleep, eat and feel. This Stress Awareness Week, we're exploring what's really going on, and small, realistic ways to feel more like yourself.
What happens when we're stressed
When your brain senses pressure, your body releases adrenaline and cortisol. Your heart beats faster, blood sugar rises and digestion takes a back seat, so you're ready to act. In short bursts, that's exactly what we need.
The trouble is that modern stress rarely switches off. It's not usually one big event, but lots of small pressures that quietly build in the background. Over time, this can disrupt sleep, drain energy, change appetite, unsettle digestion and leave us feeling anxious or on edge.
It's worth pausing to notice what's driving yours. Some pressures can't be changed, but others can be eased, whether that's saying no a little more often or sharing the load. Reducing what adds to your stress can matter as much as how you unwind.
Steady your blood sugar
Meals high in sugar or refined carbs cause blood sugar to spike and then dip, and your body reads that dip as another stress, often bringing cravings, irritability and the 4pm slump.
Aim for regular meals built around protein, colourful vegetables and slow-release carbs, especially on your busiest days.
The nutrients that matter
Magnesium and B vitamins contribute to the normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function, as well as the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. It's worth considering whether your diet provides enough of both, and a good-quality multivitamin or magnesium supplement can help cover the basics. Alongside these foundations, here are a few of our favourites for calmer days and evenings:
DRV+ Stay Calm®, combining magnesium, vitamin B6, L-theanine, ashwagandha and saffron in one considered daily formula.
HIFAS-Equilibrium, a blend of organic reishi, lion's mane and cordyceps, mushrooms traditionally used to support balance during busy periods, with added vitamin C, which contributes to normal psychological function and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Natroceutics Saffron Bioactive, with affron® saffron extract. Saffron contributes to emotional balance and helps to support relaxation.
Ancient + Brave True Nightcap, a soothing lemon and ginger drink combining magnesium, glycine, myo-inositol and choline. Sipped warm or cold, it's a gentle evening ritual to bring the day to a calm close.
Move, breathe and step outside
The most supportive rituals don't ask for extra hours in your day. They can be woven gently into the rhythm of the day you already have:
- Move. A brisk walk, Pilates or a dance around the kitchen all help release tension.
- Get outside. Morning daylight supports your body clock and better sleep.
- Breathe. Pause through the day to notice your breath and gently slow it down.
- Pause. Step away from your screen and protect your wind-down time before bed.
Be kind to yourself
When good habits slip, that's completely normal. Choose one small, doable change and build from there.
If stress starts to feel overwhelming, affecting your sleep, mood or ability to cope, reach out to someone you trust and speak to your GP. Asking for support is one of the most powerful things you can do for your wellbeing.
